Because this myth actually causes a lot of people to waste their time, energy, and attention and makes it more difficult to reach their weight loss goal. Let me explain real quick…
A lot of people get caught up in how many calories they burn exercising or cardio for weight loss, but in reality, exercise in the gym doesn’t burn as many calories as we think.
In the gym, think about the actual amount of minutes during a workout you’re actively lifting weight and exercising. I’m not talking about warming up, resting between sets, picking a song for your next exercise, flicking through Instagram, or filling up your trendy water bottle.

Because you’ll end up putting yourselves at a greater risk of injury and excessive soreness which means you’ll burn fewer calories from nonexercise movement. You’ll hurt your ability to actually build muscle and give our body that shape we want as we lose weight.

And if we compare the effort and time it takes to burn 300-500 calories via exercise versus removing 300-500 calories from our diet to create weight loss nutrition wins that battle.
We should use our diet to create a deficit for weight loss, and exercise to build and hold onto muscle as we lose weight.
